Dr. Albert Ernest Smith. Jr. passed away peacefully on March 6, 2021.
Albert was born December 4, 1938 in Ransom, Kansas to Albert and Vivian Smith. He graduated from Trego Community High School in 1956. He served in the United States Army active service from 1957-1960. He married his bride, June Catherine Channing, on December 10, 1960. They had one son, Craig and one daughter, LeAnn. Albert and June moved to Hays, Kansas where Albert attended Fort Hays Kansas State University. In 1964, they moved to College Station, Texas where Albert completed the doctoral program in Plant Biochemistry at Texas A&M University. In 1969, Albert and June moved their family of two children to Georgia to become a part of The University of Georgia bulldog family.
Albert served on the faculty of The University of Georgia Experiment Station campus in Griffin, Georgia from 1969-1997 with research responsibilities in Weed Science. He also taught several Weed Science courses at the The University of Georgia Athens Campus, published 250 scientific articles, including chapters in 7 books and was editor and co-editor of a research book and several journals. His accomplishments in research resulted in his election as Fellow of the Weed Science Society of America 1996, American Society of Agronomy 1997 and Crop Science Society of America 1999. He received 3 million dollars in gifts and grants for his research. In 1997, Albert accepted the position as Head of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at The University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. The department had 49 faculty members at four campuses assigned to research, extension and instruction. He retired from The University of Georgia in 2007. Albert enjoyed retirement at Reynolds Lake Oconee with June in Greensboro, Georgia for 12 years before moving to Holbrook Acworth Active Senior Living Community in November 2019.
Albert and June were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Griffin, Georgia and the First United Methodist Church in Greensboro, Georgia. Albert served as Deacon and on various church committees. He coached the softball team and volunteered with the youth group at the First Presbyterian Church in Griffin. He also volunteered with the Boy Scouts in Griffin, Georgia and Habitat for Humanity in Greensboro, Georgia.
Albert enjoyed playing golf at Reynolds Lake Oconee. He played for many years with a group of friends. He even got a hole in one. He also enjoyed traveling. He and June traveled to all 50 states and several countries to address at International Symposia for his research. Albert loved his family and spending the holidays with them and traveling to the mountains, beach and family reunions. He was a big UGA bulldog fan. He and June attended many bulldog football games. He also enjoyed watching the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Braves.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Vivian Smith. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Tyler Smith, Katelyn Gray and Lauren Gray.
He is survived by his wife, June Smith; his son, Craig Smith and Craigs wife, Libby Smith; Grandson, Tyler Smith and Tylers fianc, Lora Garille; his daughter, LeAnn Polk and LeAnns husband, Todd Polk; his granddaughters, Katelyn and Lauren Gray; his brother, Harry Smith and Harrys wife, Pam Smith; his sister, Beverly Tallent ; his Aunt, June Marcy and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be a visitation with the family Thursday, March 11, 2021 from 10:00 AM-11:00AM and a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM at:
