Cassie Cox Mitchell

October 13, 1928 — October 9, 2021

Cassie Cox Mitchell October 13, 1928 - October 9, 2021 Mrs. Cassie Frances Cox Mitchell departed this life October 9th, 2021, at her residence in Dunwoody, Georgia. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Russell Wayne Mitchell of Dunwoody; her daughters Gail Mitchell Cook (Jim), Dawn Mitchell, and Lisa Mitchell Carvalho (Ricardo); and six grandchildren: Jameson Croix Cook (Racheal) of Richmond, Virginia, Micah Russell Cook of Brooklyn, New York, Tessa Cook Powell (Zach) of Atlanta, Georgia, Chloe Alisa Cook of Raleigh, North Carolina, Marissa Carvalho Watts (Bill) of Atlanta, Georgia and Nicolas Mitchell Carvalho of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by five great grandchildren: Alexander Cook, Juliana Cook, Mitchell Cook, Celise Powell and Naomi Powell, many nieces and nephews, and her loving caregiver of five years, Doreen Maxwell. She is predeceased by her parents, six brothers and one sister. Cassie Frances was born in Claudville, Virginia on October 13, 1928, the daughter of Alonzo (Lon) and Ophelia Sehen Cox. One of eight children, she grew up on the family farm on Cox’s Ridge. Cassie was always eager to share stories of her idyllic childhood growing up with her big loving family. Upon graduation Cassie moved to Martinsville, Virginia where she began working for the DuPont Company, and met and married Russell Mitchell. Soon after marriage, Russell (who had recently completed his dedicated service in WWII for the US Army), and Cassie began a long and fulfilling life together living in Maryland, New York, New Jersey, St. Croix, St. Lucia and finally Atlanta. The years Cassie and Russell spent raising their family in the Caribbean were by far some of the happiest moments of her life. She made friends from all over the globe, and enjoyed wonderful days of shelling and walking her favorite beaches, listening to calypso music, gardening, sewing, reading, and cooking for family and friends. Cassie became a great follower of sports and could often be found cheering on the Atlanta Braves, or Bubba Watson! Her grandchildren were by far her favorite athletes, and she rarely missed the opportunity to cheer them on. She encouraged their love of sports, always willing to rebound the shot, pitch a few balls, or set up the putting green in her living room floor. She was the ultimate grandmother! In fact, her greatest passion in this life was children; both her own and those of others. Her loving and constant dedication to her children and grandchildren was unrivaled, and there was not a child that “Memmy” did not take time to get to know and love. This love and compassion extended to all of her beloved granddogs as well! Cassie expressed Christlike love for others, and truly lived to glorify the Lord. She was dedicated to her bible studies and enjoyed attending church services whenever possible. She was someone who always made you feel good about being exactly who you are, and was generous with her friendship, and gentle spirit. A service to honor the life of Cassie Cox Mitchell will be held Friday November 12, 2021, at 2:00 PM at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. Reception to follow at the home of Lisa and Ricardo Carvalho. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory are suggested to Snow Creek Christian Church, Martinsville, Virginia, or Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia.
