James Murrel Ellis, a 37 Year old Woodstock former resident and Army Veteran, will be laid to rest at the Georgia National Cemetery at Noon on Monday June 10th. James was a student of Woodstock High school who lost his parents when he was a sophomore, joined the Army after high school and became an Apache Attack Helicopter mechanic. After his service he fell into homelessness and came back to Woodstock in 2017. Being homeless he came to Semper Fi Restaurant and met Retired Master Sgt Ralph Roeger and asked for help in getting him off the street. Ralph contacted Jim Lindenmayer where we took Jimmie under our program to help end his then 6 and a half years of homelessness where he had been traveling across the southeast. After putting him up in a local hotel, we moved Jimmie to another longer term shelter in Atlanta where we was with other Veterans. Sometime late December early January, Jimmie left this shelter and again went back onto the street to live finally living in a cemetery off of Ralph Abernathy Blvd where he was found deceased on January 10th of this year. Arrangements are being finalized for the memorial service for Jimmie by Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program Deputy Director Mike Satterly. There will be a procession from Poole Funeral Home starting around 10:45 on Monday June 10th and his burial at the Georgia National Cemetery is scheduled for around noon that same day. Since Jimmie was picked up and supported by the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program and as such was a member of American Legion Post 45 in Canton where we acted as his home of record for VA and other correspondence. We are planning on dedicating a plaque to Jimmie at the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran Monument later this summer. If you are interested in donating you can do so by sending your donation to: Cherokee County Homeless Veteran Program c/o American Legion Post 45 160 McClure St. Canton, GA 30115
