It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and husband, James Arthur Schmalfuss, who peacefully journeyed to his heavenly home on October 3, 2023, at the age of 92.
James, born on September 3, 1931, in Zion, Illinois, was the cherished son of Estella and William Schmalfuss. In his early years, he dedicated himself to the Air Force, where he served as a staff sergeant during the Korean War. His commitment to service extended throughout his entire life.
Jim laid down his roots on Long Island with his first wife, where he raised his three sons, Andy, Bruce, and Steven, and his daughter, Sue Ann. Later, he found love again in Regina, a single mom of two girls, Tiffany and Tracey. He embraced them as his own, becoming an extraordinary father and husband for 47 years.
He was a man of unwavering faith, firmly believing that when the time came, he would answer the call of the "big man." He shared his passion for music by singing in the church choir and a barbershop quartet.
Jim's charisma, humor, and sharp wit endeared him to everyone he met. He was a pillar of strength, devotion, and humility, earning the admiration and love of many. Jim was not only a best friend to all but a true gentleman.
His love for music, sports, and game shows was well-known. He cherished impromptu trips to the city to catch a show, indulging in fine dining, bowling with friends, and, above all, spending time with his cherished family and friends. Jim had a zest for life that was infectious.
In his final moments, surrounded by loved ones at the place he held dearest, Jim found solace. In the weeks leading up to his passing, he was comforted by visits and video calls from his children and grandchildren. He peacefully embarked on his final journey with his wife and best friend by his bedside, taking his last breath with the love of his life by his side.
James Arthur Schmalfuss will be deeply missed, but his spirit and legacy will forever live on in our hearts.
