Marybeth Whitmire Hegerty was born on August 10th, 1957 in Gainesville, GA and passed away on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023 after a short but intensive battle with cancer. Marybeth is preceded in death by her parents Renette Cheeke Whitmire, Winfred Norman Whitmire and her grandson Michael Jeremy Fisher.
She is survived by her husband and best friend of over 30 years Gregory Lee Thomas, her children Brian Winfred Hegerty (wife Shanna Adams Hegerty), Matthew Maximillian Hegerty (wife Michelle Cannon Hegerty), Mary Margaret Hegerty, and step daughter Lacey Thomas. She will be dearly remembered by her three grandchildren who were a shining source of joy in her life: Ingrid Elizabeth Hegerty, Eleanor Grace Hegerty, and Graham Maxwell Hegerty. She also leaves behind her brother Ronald Norman Whitmire, M.D. and his wife Carol Dixon Whitmire along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
Betsy, as she was known and loved, graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She excelled in sales very early on and progressed from furniture to insurance and finally to chemical sales at Atco International where she had a very prolific career for the past 26 years. She will be dearly missed by her customers, managers, and friends who she met through her position as a sales executive at Atco International. When she was not working, you could always find her in the garden planting in her flower pots or multiple flower gardens around the yard, or deep in thought with a good book in hand. Betsy’s greatest joy came later in life when she was promoted to the role of Grandmother. Bee is what her grandchildren called her, and she cherished every drawing and painting they ever sent her. She planned everything from poolside picnics and tea parties in the summer to puppet shows in the winter. Spending time teaching, nurturing, and loving her grandchildren was one of her greatest joys in life, and it gave her the strength to keep fighting to get home. Her determined and energetic spirit will continue to live on in the values she has passed to the youngest generation of the family.
