Elder Monica Wangui Wangunyu

Monica Wangui Wangunyu “Teacher Monica” of Kennesaw, Georgia, passed away on July 5, 2022. Monica was born on May 19, 1957 to Silas Ragae Kamau and Hannah Wambui in Karura, Kiambaa Kenya. Monica graduated from Kericho Teachers College in Kericho Kenya in 1981 and the following year on January 30, 1982 she wed her be­loved sweetheart Stephen Gatoru Wangunyu.

Monica was a devoted and loving wife, a wonderful mother, and a mom in Christ to many. Her life was rich and full of adventure. After teaching elementary school in Kenya for 20 years, she moved to the United States in September 2001 upon which she continued with her love for children by serving as a Sunday school teacher in church and has since been known as Teacher Monica. Monica loved to cook and host people in her home, travel with her family and serve God and others. Upon her death, she had been married to her husband Ste­phen for 40 years.

Monica had many talents, including gardening, sewing, counseling young people and bringing them closer to God, problem solving and taking charge of various situations. After moving to the United States, Monica served in her church as a deacon, elder, and was head of various departments within the church, Winners Chapel Interna­tional.

Monica will be remembered for her compassion, thoughtfulness, generosity and kind spirit.

She is survived by her husband Stephen, daughters Faith, Annie, and Emma Wangunyu and son George Kamau. She is also survived by sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grand­children.

The funeral service will be held on Friday July 22 at Poole Funeral Home in Woodstock Georgia at 12 noon and a celebration of her life will be held the following day at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at East Cobb Event Center.

We count ourselves blessed to have been touched by Monica. She will forever remain in our hearts.
