Wesley Stratford Matthews

Mr. Wesley Stratford Matthews, 79 of Woodstock departed this life peacefully on Wednesday July 28, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Wesley was born in Hempstead, New York to his parents, Wesley and Beatrice McCahill Matthews. Wes was born on his father' 34th birthday. He took great pride in telling everyone that his father was a policeman in Hempstead, NY for 40 years.Wesley was proud of working for Georgia-Pacific (Yaphank, NY) and Blue Linx (Atlanta, GA) as a Senior Account Manager for 47 years, before retiring in 2014. Wesley served his country with pride in the United States Army. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf, dining out, entertaining friends and traveling to Florida every year with his family. Wesley married the love of his life Patricia Volpe Matthews on Long Island on June 20, 1970. As a young father he coached his son in football and basketball. In his later years, "Poppy"� as he' known to his grandchildren, took great pleasure in attending their school and sporting events of football, basketball, soccer and karate. He could always be seen on the sidelines cheering them on. His family will always remember his tears of joy while proudly watching his grandchildren excel.Wesley is preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Beatrice McCahill Matthews. Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Patricia Matthews, children Keith Matthews (Demaree), Deborah Rufa (David) and Dawn Barbera (Robert), grandchildren, Nicolas Barbera, Tyler Barbera and Kayla Rufa. Services to honor the life of Wesley Stratford Matthews will be at the Poole Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Woodstock on Monday August 23, 2021. Visitation will be at 11:00 AM, with the service following at 12:00PM in the chapel. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM at the Georgia National Cemetery with Military Honors performed by the United States Army Honor Guard.
